Occupational Medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention and treatment of injuries and diseases occurring at work place in specific occupations.

Occupational Medicine (also known as "Occupational Health") concentrates on the prevention and treatment of work related injuries and illnesses.

Modern definition of Occupational Health is "the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social wellbeing of workers in all occupations - total health of all at work."

Occupational medicine includes diagnosis, management and prevention of disease that has been caused or exacerbated by workplace factors. It is concerned with all aspects of the effects of work on health and health on work.

Occupational Health Physicians:

An occupational health physician is a qualified doctor whose work is varied, combining clinical medical practice with the need to influence and shape the behavior of both individuals and organizations. Occupational Health Physicians play a major role in

  • Assessing individual cases of injuries and illnesses
  • Liaison and collaboration with the employee, employer and other relevant persons
  • Visiting workplaces to advise on health and safety provision
  • Assessing the fitness of employees to undertake specific jobs
  • Advising the employer or management for improving working conditions and provision of safe occupational environment
  • Monitoring medical surveillance programs and analyzing the medical data
  • Trained on statutory requirements like the Factories Act, the Workmen compensation act, Biomedical waste management, etc

Occupational Health Nurses:

  • Occupational Health Nurses provide initial emergency care under the supervision of occupational health physician.
  • Responsible to ensure daily OHC maintenance in terms of hygiene and readiness of emergency services
  • Maintains drug inventory, emergency medical equipment, and medical records on day to day basis

Ambulance services:

  • 24/7 availability of a well equipped ambulance with basic life support facilities on site
  • Drivers trained in basic life support and safe transportation of injured or sick persons
